  • In 1621, The Pilgrims celebrate Thanksgiving, as new colonists begin to arrive, many of these new colonists are Puritans ~ Religious dissidents from England

  • Their leader is John Winthrop

  • They have a charter for a colony from King James I

(Who is more than happy to be rid of them)

  • By 1630, over 1,000 Puritans live in Massachusetts Bay Colony

Many Indentured Servants (Black & White) Come to New England

  • The Pilgrims/Puritans live in peace with Wampanoags until 1664


Puritans begin filling in Massachusetts

  • Between 1630 ~ 1640 ~ 20,000 Puritans leave England for Massachusetts

  • John Winthrop chosen as governor ~ "We must consider that we will be as "a city upon a hill" "The eyes of all people are upon us"

  • "They want Religious Freedom" But only for themselves

(Not Quakers, Catholics, etc.)

  • Puritans were strong believers in Education ~ Mandatory schooling (Public Schooling)

  • Harvard 1636

  • They subjected Indians to "Blue Laws"

Strict observance of the Sabbath

1636 ~ Pequot War ~ A violent prelude to King Phillips War

  • The Wampanoag observe just how violent the English are

  • King Phillips War (No Thanksgiving here)

  • Chief Massasoit's two sons ~ Wamsetta & Mettacom

(Alexander) (Phillip)

  • Continue the uneasy peace until (1664)


King Phillips War breaks out (late 1660's until 1676)

  • Fighting over:

    • land (cattle)

    • Indian observance of Sabbath Laws

  • 600 colonists/3,000 Indians are killed
